Lura Ellis-Newcome’s Funeral Arrangements & Celebration of Life

Dear Phlock,

For Happy Hour on Friday, September 19th we have decided to make it a covered dish affair thanks to Kelly. Nothing fancy just snacks and/or finger foods. Elaine and Larry will be bringing the Margaritaville shrimp as well. If you are planning to be at Happy Hour please let me know so that we can be sure to have enough for everyone. We will start with drinks around 5:00ish PM and we will start with the food between 6:00PM-6:30PM to give everyone a chance to get there.

With kind regards,

Tom Kogutkiewicz

Dear Phlock,

There has been a change in the meeting place for Lura’s service on Thursday, September 18, 2014. The Giggling Mackerel can not accommodate the number of people planning to attend Lura’s services. The new venue is The Ocean Isle Beach Community Center, located at 44 West 1st Street, Ocean Isle, NC 28469 (Directions) and the time remains the same at 5:00PM.

With kind regards,

Tom Kogutkiewicz

Original Announcement:

Dear Phlock,

Lura’s service will be on the beach at Ocean Isle, North Carolina on Thursday, September 18th at 5:00 pm. The plan is for everyone to meet at The Giggling Mackerel Seafood Grille at 65 Causeway Drive, Ocean Isle Beach NC and walk to the beach for the service. Lura’s sister has made arrangements for parking for everyone who will be attending the service. Here is the website for The Giggling Mackerel,

HR has requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Palmetto Parrot Head Club Alzheimer’s Fund in Lura’s Memory. Lura did love to get donations for the Fin Fest silent auction each year!! This donation will be especially meaningful with the upcoming walk on October 25th.

For those who cannot travel to Ocean Isle we will be having a special Happy Hour on Friday, September 19th in Lura’s honor. Barbie is contacting Kelly to see if we can go to the TLCB from 5’ish PM until to celebrate Lura’s life. We can sit on the patio and no one will bother us there. Lura liked going to TLCB and we thought this would be easy for everyone to get to. If there are any changes we will let you know.

With kind regards,

Tom Kogutkiewicz

UPDATE: Jimmy Buffett’s Beachcomber restaurant in Waikiki is NOT CLOSING

Buffett_Waikiki_Beachcomber_LogoJimmy Buffett’s at the Beachcomber to stay open under local management

Jimmy Buffett’s at the Beachcomber will remain open in Waikiki.

Outrigger Enterprises Group announced Tuesday that it has leased the restaurant space to JB Waikiki, LLC, a new entity created by Handcrafted Restaurants, LLC, operators of Hawaii’s Monkeypod Kitchen by Merriman.

The restaurant, located on the upper lobby level of the Holiday Inn Waikiki Beachcomber Resort, will continue to operate under the Jimmy Buffett’s brand following a one-week closure from September 1-7 while the space and menu undergo a refresh.

“We are honored to carry on Jimmy Buffett’s great operation in Waikiki and look forward to expanding on its popularity with a few changes to the facilities and new additions to the menu that highlight Hawaii local flavors,” said Bill Terry, partner at Handcrafted Restaurants LLC. “The interview process is currently underway with restaurant management and staff and we expect a quick and easy transition.”

Barbara Campbell, vice president of retail leasing at Outrigger Enterprises Group, said, “We are pleased to have reached this agreement that allows Jimmy Buffett’s at the Beachcomber restaurant to remain open under the direction of Hawaii’s JB Waikiki, LLC, and continue to serve up the great food and drinks people have come to expect from the restaurant.”

Handcrafted Restaurants LLC is a partnership between Hawaii Regional Cuisine founding chef Peter Merriman and restaurateur Bill Terry.

The restaurant group also operates Monkeypod Kitchen by Merriman’s two locations in Ko Olina and Wailea, Maui.

Sad news about Fingers Taylor

From Brent Taylor, the brother of Greg Taylor as shared on Facebook today:

To all our friends and the fans of Greg “Fingers” Taylor from the Taylor family – We would like to express the appreciation for the love and concern you have for Fingers. Many Thanks to all! Most of you know Greg was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. So many have asked how he is doing and how they can help. Finger’s is doing fine and is taken care of by “Angels on Earth”. Recently we have been challenged financially by changes in Greg’s medical coverage. We have set up a trust that allows anyone to donate funds to be used for his medical and personal care needs. If anyone wishes to help a donation can be made to the “Seth Gregory Taylor Special Needs Trust” at any Wells Fargo bank location or branch. The Trust Account Number is 7387913739. Love you all. Brent Taylor.

Children’s Trust Gala Volunteer Opportunity, Saturday, Aug. 23 (Columbia)

Children's Trust GalaI am not sure who got the emails about volunteering again for Childrens Trust…but I know that Larry, Morgan and myself are doing it.

Elaine Hoffman

Email to PPHC President:

I understand you served as a volunteer for the Children’s Trust Benefit Gala and Silent Auction last year. Our 2014 Gala is scheduled for August 23, 2014 from 6-11pm at the Columbia Marriott and we would love your help again if you’re available.

As a seasoned volunteer, you know how much work goes in to making this event successful. We have several ways in which you can lend your time to this event, from checking guests in, serving as a runner for auction tables as they close, or helping guests pick up their items.
All event volunteers must also plan to attend a short volunteer training the afternoon of Friday, August 22.

If you are available and interested in serving, please let me know by July 31, 2014. If you have a specific task you’d like to be responsible for, last year you served at check-in, please let me know. I will confirm your assignment prior to the Gala and share more information as needed. If you have any questions or would like to talk more in detail about our needs, please give me a call.

Thank you for your consideration!

Here is what an outside observer sees and hears when they attend a Jimmy Buffett concert…he obviously was sober.

For the birds: This Buffett fan sure to ruffle feathers

By Jason Sobel
July 6, 2014

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W. Va. – I’m a Jimmy Buffett fan. Not a Parrothead by any means, but enough of a fan that on a nice sunny day I’ve got no problem rolling down the windows, tuning in to his XM station and even belting out a few stanzas of “Cheeseburger in Paradise” if nobody can hear me.

(And yeah, just reading that paragraph makes me want to punch myself in the face, but I digress …)

So I was pretty excited to see him booked for a concert here Saturday night, just down the road from The Greenbrier Classic. I’d never seen him perform live. As I told a PGA Tour media official when we left the course after the third round, “Buffett’s not my favorite, but I’ve seen all my favorites. This should be pretty cool.”

And then I got ready for the show and boarded a crowded shuttle bus and got to the amphitheater and he started playing. And, well, it wasn’t that cool anymore.

Buffett and his Coral Reefer Band opened with “Summertime Blues,” a campy cover track that was popular when the 67-year-old Buffett was a pre-teen and it was probably hokey even back then. They followed with “Brown-Eyed Girl.”

(Yes, he went 0-for-2 in playing actual Buffett songs to start, immediately giving the show a karaoke disposition. In fact, later he’d even play a song with the word “KARAOKE” bleating on a screen behind him, which at least proves he was in on the joke.)

The caddie standing next to me was so young that he asked whether the Van Morrison wedding-stalwart was a Buffett original.

I’m not that young, but I’m young enough that ever since I’ve enjoyed music, I’ve always seen the Beach Boys as a Kokomo-crooning, Baby Boomer-swooning, cheesy caricature of surf-life in the 1960s.

But Buffett? Man, Buffett was cooler. Buffett was the dude who’d rather hang out at the beach bar with a few cold beverages and a guitar than show off to the coeds with his surfing moves.

On this night, though, I couldn’t help thinking he wasn’t cool anymore. Maybe he never was in the first place.

He wore a bright pink “Margaritaville” T-shirt, lemon yellow shorts and no shoes. He smiled a lot, which was good, and paused a lot, which wasn’t.

The entire show, which featured at least a dozen guitarists and horn players and AARP-ish women singing background vocals alongside him onstage, had the feel of Uncle Larry crashing your Fourth of July party with some of his pals.

Or better yet, Uncle Larry shooting a commercial for his Lucky Larry’s Used Car Emporium.

It was schmaltz upon schmaltz. It was music’s answer to vaudeville theater.

If the Beach Boys are a caricature of long-ago surf-life, Buffett is a caricature of Buffett.

Then again, it seems to be working for him.

The amphitheater was packed. Fans sang along. When Buffett wailed, “Fins to the left, fins to the right …” everybody clapped two hands together over their heads and swayed back and forth. A few diehards even wore actual stuffed parrots on their heads.

Hey, more power to ‘em. The brand works. Just like we’d say of a few of the older golfers who were in attendance, Buffett may not do anything great, but he knows how to get himself around the course and post a score.
