PIGEON FORGE (WATE) – Rainy weather did not keep visitors from pouring into one of our top tourism spots in East Tennessee Friday, and there is a new attraction grabbing their attention.

Friday was a big day for folks at The Island with the opening of the Margaritaville Island Hotel.

They opened about 57 rooms and expect to have the rest open by the end of this year.

“We want to actually finish the job of eat, play and shop, and now we have eat, shop, play and stay,” said developer Darby Campbell.

For nearly 10 years, The Island has been a dream for developers.

Now it is all coming together with two big openings in one week, the Margaritaville Island Hotel and Ole Smoky Moonshine Distillery.

“All the partners are excited about how far it’s come. There’s been some highs and lows but overall now we couldn’t be more excited and the folks that are coming are really excited,” said Campbell.

Those visiting the area say they love seeing Pigeon Forge and The Island continue to grow.

“You come in one time and they’ve torn this building down and put a new building up, all the new hotels that are here and of course the Island being here,” said Donnie Mitchell from Middle Tennessee.

Developers are hoping the hotel will draw even more people to the area, boosting tourism and also attracting more businesses to The Island, giving people something different to see and do.

“If you can see behind me over the door it says it’s five o’clock somewhere, and that’s truly what we expect for you to feel when you get here,” said Campbell.

Tourists say they are ready for more change and hope to continue seeing new exciting things coming to Pigeon Forge.

“More family friendly, kind of more spread out. It’s just different, totally different,” said Mitchell.

Officials say the rest of the rooms at the Margaritaville Island Hotel should open in December.
